Back Pain Clinic Kelowna

Back Pain Clinic Kelowna - The spine is separated into areas - the cervical, the thoracic, and the lumbar. The bottom of the spine is where the sacrum and coccyx bones are located - the pelvic area. Each and every area of the spine marks a curve in the spine's curvature. The spine's S-curvature maintains correct body alignment, protects the spinal cord, and allows flexibility and mobility.

There are 33 vertebrae that make up the vertebral column. In the first three regions, there are 24 separate vertebrae, whereas the remaining 9 are connected into the sacrum and the coccyx. The vertebrae all share the same basic structure but have slightly different appearances and forms, such as size differences, along the spine. Sandwiched between the first 24 vertebrae are shock-absorbing discs which enable the spine to remain flexible.

The vertebral column serves many purposes. Amongst which is to protect the spinal cord, whilst also providing flexibility, stability, and balance for the body. The column has connection points for the pelvic bones, muscle groups and ribs. The column supports the weight and structure of the body.

The spinal cord has two vital functions - coordinating simple reflexes and connecting the brain to the peripheral nervous system. For example, it is the spinal cord that sends a signal to pull your hand away from a hot stove.

The peripheral nervous system refers to the nerves used for sending signals to and from the brain and the spinal cord. The skin, internal organs, muscles, and blood vessels all communicate via 31 pairs of spinal nerves along the spinal cord.
